Have you noticed during your braces treatment that some teeth seem to be moving faster than others? Is that normal? Is it planned? What makes some teeth move faster than others with braces?

At Smith & Davis Orthodontics, we expect some teeth to move faster than others. It’s all part of your braces treatment plan. As orthodontists, we are trained to understand how teeth move and how to guide that movement.

Here’s what to know about why some teeth move faster than others, and how that can be part of treatment planning.

How Do Teeth Move With Braces?

How do braces make teeth move? The best way to understand why some teeth move faster than others is to first understand how braces work.

Braces are made up of three main components: brackets, bands, and wires. The bands fit on the back molars and anchor the braces. Brackets are placed on the surface of each tooth, and an archwire connects them all. The ends of the archwires fit into the bands.

The archwire applies gentle, steady pressure to the brackets and bands, guiding teeth into position over time. Additional components may be used to move teeth in different directions or adjust how they respond to treatment. This can include power chains or rubber bands for braces.

We’ll determine what your teeth need during your first visit consultation. That’s when we will perform a detailed examination of your mouth, take digital images and X-rays, and create a customized treatment plan designed to improve your smile.

How Do Teeth Move?

Braces work because the body can adapt and remodel bone tissue. Two processes are involved in braces treatment: resorption and remodeling.

The bone surrounding your teeth’s roots changes as pressure is applied. Some bone is broken down and absorbed by the body in a process called resorption.

It’s common to wonder whether this means teeth could become loose, but this process is carefully managed so teeth can move safely. The second process — remodeling — occurs as new bone forms behind the tooth as it moves.

These two processes begin gradually and continue throughout treatment, allowing teeth to shift into new positions. Once your teeth are where they should be, we remove your braces and fit retainers, which help hold your teeth in place as the surrounding bone stabilizes. The result is a more aligned smile that you can maintain long-term.

These processes may seem simple, but planning around them is complex. Orthodontic treatment should be provided by a trained orthodontic professional.

Why Do Some Teeth Move Faster Than Others?

So what makes some teeth move faster than others? Several factors are involved, from the teeth themselves to your age and health.

For example, the front teeth tend to move more easily because they have a single root set in thinner bone. Molars, on the other hand, have multiple roots set in a thicker area of your jawbone. Does that mean your molars won’t move? Definitely not — it just means they may respond differently to treatment.

There are other factors to consider when moving teeth.

Bone Density Matters

Bone density can influence how teeth respond to movement, and this can vary from person to person. Bone density may be affected by age, genetics, certain medical conditions, and nutrition.

Bones and Aging

We mentioned bone density and aging, but bone responsiveness is another factor. In children, bones are still developing and tend to respond more readily to orthodontic movement. As we age, bone can become less responsive, which may make tooth movement slower — but still very possible.

This doesn’t mean that adults can’t get braces. It just means treatment may take longer compared to children. Many adults can still achieve meaningful improvements with orthodontic treatment.

How Healthy Is Your Mouth?

The health of your whole mouth matters, not just your bones. Your gums, the ligaments surrounding your teeth, and other oral tissue need to be healthy for the best results.

Oral hygiene plays an important role in treatment outcomes, so it’s important to start with a healthy foundation. That’s why we recommend seeing your dentist for a checkup and professional cleaning before beginning orthodontic treatment.

What can affect your treatment with braces or clear aligners? Smoking and the use of other tobacco products can affect gum health. Certain medications or hormonal changes (such as during pregnancy) can contribute to dry mouth or other oral health changes. Some health conditions, such as diabetes, may also influence oral health.

Your orthodontist and dentist can work together to help support your oral health throughout treatment.

Some Teeth Need a Bit Extra

Some teeth may be further out of place than others. They may be rotated, crowded, or positioned in front of or behind other teeth. These teeth may require additional guidance to move into position.

We may use additional orthodontic appliances, such as power chains, which help close gaps between teeth, or elastics, which help guide teeth into alignment.

Which teeth need to move more or differently than others is part of your personalized treatment plan, developed after your initial examination.

How Long Do Braces Take to Work?

The biggest question we get from new patients is “How long will braces take?” Braces move teeth at different speeds, so does that mean treatment will be shorter or longer than expected?

Braces, on average, take 12–24 months. Some people may wear braces for less time, while others may need longer. Treatment length depends on several factors, including the number and severity of orthodontic concerns, your age, and your oral health.

We’ll estimate your treatment time as part of your treatment plan.

What If My Teeth Don’t Move Fast Enough?

You may not notice movement right away. Tooth movement is gradual, especially in the early stages of treatment.

This is one reason before-and-after photos can be helpful, as they allow you to see progress over time. Comparing your smile at different stages of treatment often shows changes that may not be noticeable day to day.

No matter how fast or slow your teeth seem to be moving, your orthodontist will adjust your treatment as needed to support steady, safe progress.
